Founded in Freiburg in 1986, Ensemble Aventure is one of the oldest and most important contemporary music ensembles in Europe. With its famous Freiburg concert series, its close contacts with composers all over the world, its many new commissions, hundreds of world premieres, international tours, some 20 CDs and several publications on communicating contemporary music, Aventure has left an indelible mark on the music of our time and presented it to a wide-ranging audience.
Its repertoire ranges from the Second Viennese School and the American avant-garde via Dada, Fluxus, concept art, critical composing and Darmstadt avant-gardism to several works by younger composers. Its special focuses include the music of politically persecuted or suppressed composers, to whose rediscovery the ensemble has made major contributions, and the encounter with non-European worlds of composition, especially the contemporary music of Latin America, Israel and Palestine.
The International Elisabeth Schneider Composers’ Competition, awarded three times to Aventure between 2001 and 2005; the Freiburger Frühling (Freiburg Spring Festival), founded in 2005 with an open workshop character; a wide range of music education projects at public schools, music schools and universities: all these point to Ensemble Aventure as a formation with a sharply defined artistic and educational approach that has also led to its participation in MehrKlang Freiburg, a contemporary music network (Netzwerk Neue Musik) sponsored by Germany’s Federal Cultural Foundation since 2008.
Its superb artistic attainments and wide-ranging activities have been honoured by prizes from the European Business Community, the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung and the German Record Critics. Ensemble Aventure is sponsored at the institutional level by the City of Freiburg and the Land of Baden-Württemberg.
