A rich, beautiful tone or unstable multiphonics: both ends of the spectrum are presented absolutely convincingly by the vocal artist Sylvia Nopper. With her phenomenal creative talent, she sings Baroque oratorios just as readily as bringing to life brand-new scores full of vocal noises. Her artistic curiosity and taste for discovery make her an ideal performer of contemporary music. It is not surprising, then, that most of the over 150 works that she has performed by now, ranging from solo pieces to operas, were also written for her.
She devotes herself no less passionately to her second great love, chamber music. With an enormous wealth of tone colours and dynamic possibilities, she moves effortlessly through the various styles of the last 500 years. She has focused especially on the lieder of Romanticism and the twentieth century.
She has performed with conductors such as Susanna Mälkki, Heinz Holliger, Jürg Wyttenbach and Pierre Boulez, with Ensemble Modern Frankfurt, Ensemble intercontemporain Paris, Klangforum Wien, Phoenix Basel, Contrechamps Genève, the Swiss Chamber Soloists and many renowned orchestras at festivals all over the world. Numerous CD and radio recordings document the inexhaustible passion with which she keeps facing the challenge of crossing supposed boundaries and advancing into unknown musical areas, opening up new perspectives and making the impossible possible.
In her teaching capacity at the Basel Academy of Music and the Bern Academy of Arts, Sylvia Nopper passes on her experience as a singer with great dedication.
