The Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain NEC was founded in 1994 in the Swiss town of La Chaux-de-Fonds. Its 20 permanent members come from the whole of Switzerland and devote themselves with curiosity, conviction and passion to contemporary music.
Its performances in Switzerland’s music centres soon drew attention from abroad. Since 1995 it has been headed by Pierre-Alain Monot. It also attracts guest conductors and soloists of international renown, organises world premières, cultivates a broad existing repertoire and strives for its recognition by the listening public.
The NEC is regularly featured on the programmes of Swiss broadcasters and France Musique. Its three tours of China (2003, 2007 and 2010), its involvement in the Boswil International Composition Seminar and its participation in the ISCM World New Music Days have served as a springboard to international acclaim.
