The Sonar Quartet (Susanne Zapf, violin / Kirsten Harms, violin / Nikolaus Schlierf, viola / Cosima Gerhardt, violoncello) have concentrated on the music of the 21st Century and work with composers on a close basis. It has given many workshops and played at numerous large festivals and more intimate events, such as UltraSchall Festival, Young China (Hessian Radio) and the Siemens Arts Programm, Randspiele Zepernick, Ostrava Days, Intersonanzen Potsdam, Pan Music Festival Seoul, Forum for New Music Cologne, and the Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik. Since its foundation in 2006, the Sonar Quartet has especially encouraged young composers. In the concert series founded by the ensemble “Berlin im Quadrat”, which is supported by the Initiative for New Music Berlin (Initiative Neue Musik Berlin) and the German Music Council (Deutscher Musikrat), this theme comes to the fore where programming is concerned. The quartet is also interested in exploring the literature of past eras and seldom played works from the first half of the 20th Century by composers such as Gabriel Fauré, Hanns Eisler, Stefan Wolpe or Roger Sessions.
