Anna Spina was born in Berne in 1971 and studied Viola at the Conservatories in Berne and Zurich. Later she worked through the repertoire of instrumental theatre with the Graeco-French composer Georges Aperghis at the Berne University of Arts. Anna Spina is a much sought-after performer of contemporary music and a highly innovative and multi-faceted viola player. Without denying her classical heritage, she explores and works in a very wide range of fields: besides being a member and featured soloist of Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain and many other contemporary music groups, she takes an active interest in mictrotonal and spectral music and has explored the Arabic tonal systems in lessons with the Egyptian violinist Abdou Dagher. In 2005 she was invited by the Swiss Cultural Foundation to join an intercultural project in Cairo, and in 2008 she was accepted into a large-scale exchange programme with China. Her repertoire encompasses the standard solo and chamber music literature of the 20th and 21st centuries as well as works written specially for her. Whenever possible she works out her interpretations jointly with the composers – as was the case on this CD.
