Vladimír Válek studied viola, trombone, and conducting in Bratislava and continued his studies at the Academy of Music in Prague. For ten years he was conductor of the Prague Symphony Orchestra; in 1985 he assumed the post of chief conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and he continues to hold this position to this day. Since 1996 he has also been a conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
Vladimír Válek appears as guest conductor with various orchestras in Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, and the Far East. He has worked with soloist such as Igor Oistrakh, Mischa Maisky, Heinrich Schiff, and Vladimir Spivakov. He has made numerous recordings; his recording of Erwin Schulhoff’s piano concertos won the Cannes Classical Award in 1996.
