When Ernst Helmuth Flammer uses electronics in his works, he attaches great importance to using material recorded by musicians as the sound source. He calls the result of this renunciation of synthetically generated sounds »breathing electronics«. Most of the works could also be implemented live electronically, which has happened with some. However, Flammer appreciates the work in the studio, as it ultimately gives him as a composer more control over the tonal result, which is why live electronics were not used for re-performances or recordings.
So there are three works for solo instrument with tape, all composed in the 1990s, two of them for the violist Marurizio Barbetti: vorn II ... and discursive - with an urgent reply, the latter also exclusively using viola sounds as the starting material for the electronics used.
Panoptikum – a mobile sound for soprano saxophone and 4-channel tape was originally conceived as a performance at the Salzburg Festival; the studio or concert version was created later and was specially recorded by Simone Ehinger for this edition.
