“Dunkle Stimmen”, the eleventh CD in the Wohlhauser Edition on NEOS, contains nine works for various ensemble combinations. All compositions were recorded by the “Duo Simolka–Wohlhauser,” with the composer himself performing alongside soprano Christine Simolka as baritone, pianist, and percussionist.
The texts set to music are almost exclusively poems written by René Wohlhauser. Only in Une nuit toute passionnée does he use excerpts from a letter from Simone de Beauvoir to Jean-Paul Sartre.
Some of the works, such as Im lauteren Sein, Miramsobale, Geworf’ne Akrobaten, and Une nuit toute passionnée, have already appeared on earlier CDs in the Wohlhauser Edition, but here they are presented in versions with new instrumentation. This impressively demonstrates the versatility of René Wohlhauser's compositional work.
