Carmina Quartett

String Quartet

Biography:

Matthias Enderle, Violine
Susanne Frank, Violine
Wendy Champney, Viola
Stephan Goerner, Violoncello

Great musical intensity, natural perfection and an keen interest in stylistic fidelity characterise the Carmina Quartet, founded in Switzerland in 1984. Early on, spectacular competition successes made headlines in the international press and paved the way to the world's major concert stages. The Financial Times ranked the Carmina Quartet among the leading string quartets of our time.

The quartet's mentors include the Amadeus Quartet and the La Salle Quartet, Sandor Végh and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Working with this great personality in particular fostered an understanding of historical performance practice, which has since shaped the Carmina Quartet's undogmatic and lively interpretations. In addition to a large quartet repertoire that includes rarities from all eras, the quartet also enjoys collaborating with musicians such as Mitsuko Uchida, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Emmanuel Pahud, Truls Mork, Wolfgang Meyer, Sabine Meyer, Antonio Menesses, Veronika Hagen, Olaf Bär and Wolfgang Holzmair.

All CD recordings released by Denon to date have been met with unanimous admiration from critics and audiences alike and have received prestigious awards: Gramophone Award, Diapason d'Or, Choc, German Record Critics' Award, Grammy Award nomination.

As Quartet in Residence at the Zurich/Winterthur University of Music, the Carmina Quartet passes on its wealth of experience and distinctive, independent musicality to the next generation.
