Biography:
The ChorWerk Ruhr is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's leading ensembles. It was founded in 1999 as a project of the Regional Cultural Policy of North Rhine-Westphalia with the aim of establishing an ensemble that would both take into account aspects of individual vocal training and contribute to the artistic profile of the region. Frieder Bernius served as artistic director until 2003. Since then, the ensemble has worked regularly with various renowned conductors such as Rupert Huber, Bruno Weil, Christopher Moulds, Hans Zender, Reinhard Goebel, Peter Neumann, Robin Gritton and Sylvain Cambreling. Since October 2008, the Austrian composer and conductor Prof. Rupert Huber has been the new artistic director of the ChorWerk Ruhr.
Depending on the work and the various stylistic and performance requirements, the choir has between 16 and 100 singers. This has resulted in a pool of more than 180 choristers, with whom ChorWerk Ruhr has rehearsed more than 50 projects and performed in over 100 concerts and performances.
In its numerous projects, ChorWerk Ruhr has developed a wide range of choral literature and continues to pursue its goal of conveying the full stylistic diversity of vocal music to both its own singers and its audience at the highest possible artistic level. In collaboration with renowned orchestras such as the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Ensemble Resonanz, the musikFabrik NRW, the Schönberg Ensemble Amsterdam, the Cappella Coloniensis, the Ensemble Modern, the Neue Düsseldorfer Hofmusik, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, the ChorWerk Ruhr continues to thrill its audiences.
The often extremely demanding a cappella projects are also of particular importance for the choir's sound and the singers' qualifications. ChorWerk Ruhr has steadily built on its success with the press and audiences, and the ensemble has now established itself as one of the region's high-quality artistic trademarks. This is also evidenced by frequent recordings by WDR and DLF, as well as co-productions with the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen and the Klavier-Festival Ruhr. Every year, the ChorWerk Ruhr cooperates and co-produces in a special form with the RuhrTriennale.
ChorWerk Ruhr is a project of Kultur Ruhr GmbH with the support of the Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia and the European Regional Development Fund.
