Biography:
Founded in 1993, the Collegium Novum Zurich (CNZ) has become an integral part of the Swiss cultural scene. Driven by a curiosity for contemporary music, the ensemble has never lost its significance over the decades and brings contemporary music to a wide audience. The main focus of the 25-member ensemble has always been on creation, musical exchange and collaboration with composers. This has resulted in large-scale ensemble works, performed at venues such as the Tonhalle Zurich, as well as interdisciplinary works tailored to diverse and sometimes unusual venues. Productions range from classical concert experiences and musical theatre to improvisation and performance.
The ensemble, which features leading musicians from the Swiss music scene, programmes the latest music alongside classics and masterpieces from the 20th and 21st centuries, placing them in a meaningful context. The high standard of the soloist ensemble allows for varied concert planning with flexible line-ups, including conducted concerts, chamber music concerts in various formations and solo performances by the musicians.
The CNZ has premiered numerous works, including compositions by William Blank, Xavier Dayer, Beat Furrer, Georg Friedrich Haas, Hans Werner Henze, Klaus Huber, Michael Jarrell, Jorge López, Cécile Marti, Isabel Mundry, Emmanuel Nunes, Helmut Oehring and Enno Poppe. The ensemble has been conducted by Pierre Boulez, Tito Ceccherini, Sylvain Cambreling, Pablo Heras-Casado, Heinz Holliger, Mauricio Kagel, Lin Liao, Johanna Malangré, Susanna Mälkki, Emilio Pomàrico, Peter Rundel, Elena Schwarz and Yalda Zamani.
The CNZ performs regularly at home and abroad and appears at most renowned festivals and events. It records for various CD labels and has earned an excellent reputation on the international market.
