Biography:

James Avery is a founding member and artistic director of the Ensemble SurPlus. Originally from Kansas, the pianist and conductor received his training at the University of Kansas, where he studied with Roy Hamlin Johnson [piano] and Robert Baustian, and at Indiana University with Walter Robert [piano] and Tibor Kozma.

He was a prize winner in the Gaudeamus Competition for performers of contemporary music. From 1980 to 2004, he was professor of piano at the Freiburg University of Music, and from 1986 to 1988, he was visiting professor at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.
