Biography:

Julius Berger, born in Augsburg in 1954, studied at the Munich University of Music with Walter Reichardt and Fritz Kiskalt, at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Antonio Janigro (as whose assistant he worked from 1979 to 1982), at the University of Cincinnati (USA) with Zara Nelsova, and in a master class with Mstislav Rostropovich. First in Würzburg, then later in Saarbrücken, Mainz and Augsburg, he promotes the best young talent in his field. Since 1992, he has also taught a class at the International Summer Academy of the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.

His performances and CDs of works for cello and piano by Paul Hindemith, Ernst Bloch, Max Bruch, Richard Strauss, Robert Schumann and Edward Elgar have attracted worldwide attention. Julius Berger has also made a name for himself through his great commitment to contemporary compositions, resulting in internationally acclaimed CD recordings. Julius Berger is artistic director of the Eckelshausen Music Festival and the Asiago Festival (Italy). As president, he heads the Leopold Mozart International Violin Competition in Augsburg and the Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition. His international jury work has taken him to competitions in Salzburg (Mozart), Kronberg (Casals), Markneukirchen, Munich and Warsaw, among others. In 2009, Julius Berger was elected a full member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz.
