Biography:

Mark Andre, born in Paris in 1964, studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris (DEA on the subject of ‘Le compossible musical de l'Ars subtilior’), at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris with Claude Ballif and Gérard Grisey (Premier Prix de Composition) and with Prof. Helmut Lachenmann at the University of Music in Stuttgart (Grand Composition Examination).

He has won numerous competitions, including the Villa Medici Competition (Prix de Rome for composition), the City of Stuttgart Composition Competition, the Frankfurt Opera Prize, the Kranichstein Music Prize of the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music, the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Sponsorship Prize, the Berlin Academy of Arts Sponsorship Prize, the Christoph and Stephan Kaske Foundation Composition Prize, the Giga-Hertz Production Prize of the ZKM and Experimental Studio of the SWR, and the Orchestra Prize of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg at the Donaueschingen Music Days.

He has been a lecturer at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music, the Academie d’Aix en Provence, Royaumont, the Takefu International Music Festival, the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO Academy matrix and the Fellowship Seminar at Voksenåsen Oslo. In 2009, Mark Andre was appointed a member of the Academy of Arts (Music Section) in Berlin, in 2010 he became a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Arts, and in 2012/13 he is a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.
