Biography:
Since winning the International Messiaen Competition in Paris in 2000, Markus Bellheim has attracted attention as one of the most interesting and versatile pianists of his generation. His extensive concert activities take him throughout Europe, Asia and America. He performs at major festivals and concert series (including Beethovenfest Bonn, Kasseler Musiktage, La Roque d'Anthéron, Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus, Shanghai Music Spring Festival). Renowned orchestras invite Markus Bellheim to interpret works from the classical repertoire with them. He also performs with established contemporary music ensembles such as Ensemble Modern and Ensemble intercontemporain.
Markus Bellheim works with conductors such as Sylvain Cambreling, Jonathan Nott and Karl Anton Rickenbacher, as well as composers Steve Reich, György Kurtág and Wolfgang Rihm. He also performs chamber music with renowned artists such as Ingolf Turban, Eduard Brunner, Marisol Montalvo and the Minguet Quartet. He has a particular interest in contemporary music, which he pursues alongside his intensive study of classical and romantic works. He has performed Olivier Messiaen's complete works for solo piano several times to enthusiastic audience response. He performs Messiaen's most important work for solo piano and orchestra, the Turangalîla Symphony, all over the world.
Markus Bellheim heads a piano class at the University of Music Würzburg and has been professor of piano at the Munich University of Music since 2011. He also regularly gives masterclasses in Germany and abroad.
