Pierre-Laurent Aimard

Piano

Biography:

The composer György Ligeti described Pierre-Laurent Aimard as the leading interpreter of contemporary music – because his playing combines technical perfection with poetic sensitivity.

According to the pianist himself, who hails from Lyon, he was “magnetically drawn” to new music from an early age. His studies with Yvonne Loriod, wife of composer Olivier Messiaen, had a formative influence on him. She introduced the twelve-year-old to her husband, who became Aimard’s “musical father”.

In 1973, the artist won the Olivier Messiaen Competition and embarked on an unprecedented international career. Three years later, Pierre Boulez recruited him as solo pianist for the Ensemble Intercontemporain. Aimard works with almost all of the great composers of our time. But beyond that, he is also a sought-after interpreter of the ‘traditional’ repertoire.
