Biography:
Stefan Asbury, a scholarship holder at Oxford University and the Royal College of Music, studied conducting with Oliver Knussen; in 1990, he continued his studies in the USA, including at the Tanglewood Music Centre. He became deputy director of the Oxford Contemporary Music Festival and conducted numerous world premieres as well as studio and concert recordings with the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
He was Associate Director for New Music at Tanglewood; in 2001, he became principal conductor of the Bit 20 ensemble in Oslo. Stefan Asbury works with numerous ensembles and orchestras: DSO Berlin, Basel Symphony Orchestra, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, NDR Symphony Orchestra Hamburg, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, Opéra de Lyon, Netherlands Dance Theatre, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Avanti!, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne. In 2004, he was awarded the BMW Music Theatre Prize (for the premiere of Rob Zuidam's opera Freeze). His production Les espaces acoustiques received the German Record Critics' Award.
