Biography:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Hummel<\/strong>, 1962 geboren, wuchs in einem den Naturwissenschaften und der klassischen Musik verpflichteten Elternhaus im Rheinland auf. Er spielte Violoncello und begann fr\u00fch zu komponieren. Zun\u00e4chst entschloss er sich jedoch, in die Fu\u00dfstapfen seines Vaters zu treten und studierte Chemie. Neben dem Studium entstanden neue Kompositionen, f\u00fcr die er Preise erhielt. Nach dem Diplom 1986 begann er auf Rat eines Freundes ein Kompositionsstudium in K\u00f6ln. Kurze Zeit sp\u00e4ter setzte er das Studium in Freiburg bei Mathias Spahlinger fort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Verquickung der naturwissenschaftlichen mit der musikalischen Ausbildung brachte ihn bald auch zu seiner zweiten Profession, der Musikinformatik. Nach einem zweij\u00e4hrigen Aufenthalt am IRCAM in Paris, wo er Computermusikkurse besuchte und mehrere Kompositionen zur Auff\u00fchrung brachte, wechselte er 1994 zum EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO des SWR. Als Mitarbeiter realisierte er dort mit zahllosen Komponisten live-elektronische Werke und brachte sie zur Auff\u00fchrung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daneben entwickelte er zun\u00e4chst neue live-elektronische Konzepte und Software zur Raumklangsteuerung. Sp\u00e4ter arbeitete er in zunehmendem Ma\u00dfe an Orchestrationsinformationssystemen. \u203aThe Virtual Orchestra\u2039 wurde 2002 ver\u00f6ffentlicht und befindet sich international im Einsatz. Das Nachfolgesystem \u203aconTimbre\u2039 wird seit 2006 in Zusammenarbeit mit vielen Interpreten zeitgen\u00f6ssischer Musik entwickelt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Hummel unterrichtete wiederholt Computermusik und elektronische Musik an der Hochschule f\u00fcr Gestaltung Karlsruhe und am musikwissenschaftlichen Institut der Universit\u00e4t Freiburg. Seine Werke wurden unter anderem vom RSO Stuttgart, dem Kairos Quartett, der Holst-Sinfonietta und dem Ensemble SurPlus aufgef\u00fchrt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
