Die Vorgeschichte des Weihnachtsalbums<\/b><\/p>\n

Als ich Anfang 2008 beschloss, ein Weihnachtsalbum zugunsten SOS-Kinderdorf e.V. zu konzeptionieren, ahnte ich nicht, wie viel wunderbare Unterst\u00fctzung dem Projekt zuteil werden w\u00fcrde. Ich ahnte auch nicht, welche Herausforderung die vorliegende CD f\u00fcr alle Beteiligten bedeuten w\u00fcrde. Mehr als einmal drohte das Engagement zu scheitern. Umso dankbarer bin ich heute daf\u00fcr, ein Weihnachtsalbum vorstellen zu k\u00f6nnen, das sicherlich genauso spannend wie abwechslungsreich ist \u2013 ein Album, das den Bogen zwischen traditionellem und neuem Weihnachtsrepertoire spannt, das mit vier Weltersteinspielungen aufwartet und mit einer Einspielung des ber\u00fchmten Weihnachtsliedes\u00a0Stille Nacht<\/i>, die an die alpenl\u00e4ndischen Originalversion von Franz Xaver Gruber von 1818 erinnert.<\/p>\n

Ein weiteres zentrales Werk des Albums ist das Lied\u00a0O du fr\u00f6hliche<\/i>\u00a0\u2013 urspr\u00fcnglich ein sizilianisches Fischerlied, das Johannes Falk 1816 f\u00fcr das Weihnachtsfest von Waisenkindern als Weihnachtslied bearbeitete. Mein herzlicher Dank gilt allen Musikern, die auf Honorare verzichteten, um die Werke einzustudieren und an vier Studiotagen zu produzieren. Ich danke den Solisten des\u00a0T\u00f6lzer Knabenchor<\/a>s mit ihrem Leiter\u00a0Ralf Ludewig<\/a>, der Cembalistin\u00a0Marga Scheurich-Henschel<\/a>, dem Bassisten\u00a0Frank Reinecke<\/a>\u00a0und nat\u00fcrlich meinen Quartett-Kollegen Christoph Henschel, Markus Henschel und Mathias Beyer-Karlsh\u00f8j. Franz Beyer geb\u00fchrt der Dank f\u00fcr alle ben\u00f6tigten Arrangements.<\/p>\n

Das BBC Music Magazine erm\u00f6glichte den Kompositionswettbewerb, aus dem die neuen Weihnachtskompositionen f\u00fcr Knabensolisten und Streichquartett hervorgingen. F\u00fcr die Jury des Wettbewerbs erfuhr ich wertvolle, ehrenamtliche Unterst\u00fctzung durch Oliver Condy (Editor BBC Music Magazine), Roxanna Panufnik (Komponistin), Philip Tagney (Producer BBC Radio 3) und Wulf Weinmann (NEOS Music GmbH).<\/p>\n

Die Jury gratuliert dem Gewinner\u00a0Derek Smith<\/a>\u00a0(Malvern, England) zum 1. Preis f\u00fcr seine Komposition\u00a0Carolingua<\/i>\u00a0und freut sich, dass drei weitere, ebenfalls ausgezeichnete Werke produziert werden konnten:\u00a0And Mary said<\/i>\u00a0von\u00a0Andy Evans<\/a>\u00a0(Nottingham, England),\u00a0The Incarnation<\/i>\u00a0von\u00a0Roland Fudge<\/a>\u00a0(Lancaster, England) und\u00a0The Christ-child Carol<\/i>\u00a0von\u00a0Earl J. Reisdorff<\/a>\u00a0(Michigan, USA).<\/p>\n

Das gro\u00dfe Engagement aller Beteiligten macht erst Sinn durch die vorliegende Ver\u00f6ffentlichung der CD durch NEOS Music GmbH. In a festive season so full of excess it is heart-warming to come across a\u00a0Christmas offering that contains a special artistic purity together with a\u00a0reverential quality and charitable intentions. This release titled \u2018Merry\u00a0Christmas\u2019 devised and played by the renowned Henschel Quartet is an inspiring collection of beautiful Christmas music of both traditional and\u00a0 contemporary repertoire. On the majority of the tracks the Henschel are joined\u00a0by a basso continuo and boys choir. Included are four world premiere recordings and several other first recordings in these new instrumental arrangements by Franz Beyer and by Monika Henschel-Schwind.<\/p>\n

The inspiration for the disc came about from the passion and enthusiasm of Monika Henschel-Schwind to assist the SOS Children\u2019s Villages. The organisation SOS\u00a0Children is the world\u2019s largest orphan and abandoned children\u2019s charity. In\u00a02008 Monika decided to produce a Christmas album with her fellow Henschel\u00a0members that would benefit the charity with 2 euros from each CD sale going to\u00a0SOS Children\u2019s Villages. The choir is provided by the renowned T\u00f6lzer\u00a0Knabenchor (T\u00f6lz Boys Choir) directed by their choirmaster Ralf Ludewig. Based\u00a0in Munich and founded over fifty years ago by chorus master Gerhard\u00a0Schmidt-Gaden the T\u00f6lzer Knabenchor still maintains roots with the Bavarian town of Bad T\u00f6lz. Valuable basso continuo accompaniment is provided by harpsichordist Marga Scheurich-Henschel and the double-bass of Frank Reinecke.<\/p>\n

Nine of these Christmas works for boys voices and string\u00a0 quartet came about as a result of a composing competition in the BBC Music\u00a0Magazine. The jury awarded Derek Smith the first prize for\u00a0Carolingua<\/i>.\u00a0In addition three other impressive entries from the competition were also\u00a0recorded for the disc:\u00a0And Mary said<\/i>\u00a0by Andy Evans;\u00a0The Incarnation<\/i>\u00a0by Roland\u00a0 Fudge <http:\/\/www.musicweb-international.com\/sandh\/2010\/Jan-Jun10\/Finzi_2703.htm<\/a>>\u00a0 and\u00a0The Christ-child Carol<\/i>\u00a0by Earl J. Reisdorff.<\/p>\n

Four tracks are sung in English, three are in German with a further song\u00a0straddling four languages; there is not a weak track on the whole Christmas\u00a0collection. Several had a special appeal to me. Highly attractive is the\u00a0choral anthem\u00a0Bethlehem Down<\/i>\u00a0composed by the troubled composer Peter\u00a0Warlock (aka Philip Heseltine) to a text by his friend Bruce Blunt. Short of\u00a0money the two reprobates entered the score in the Daily Telegraph\u2019s annual\u00a0 carol competition. Here Bethlehem Down is hauntingly performed with a\u00a0 measured dignity. The vulnerability of the boys choir is particularly\u00a0 attractive.<\/p>\n

In my view the standout track is the gloriously\u00a0performed world famous carol\u00a0Stille Nacht<\/i>\u00a0(Silent Night). Franz\u00a0Beyer\u2019s arrangement is based on Franz Xaver Gruber\u2019s original Alpine version\u00a0from 1818. With its unforgettable vocal melody and catchy instrumentation in\u00a0this new arrangement I can imagine Stille Nacht proving a real\u00a0Christmas hit if taken up by a radio station.<\/p>\n

Another\u00a0splendidly performed work is the carol\u00a0O du fr\u00f6hliche<\/i>\u00a0(O, How Joyfully) in a Franz Beyer arrangement. Originally a traditional Sicilian fisherman\u2019s song it was arranged in Goethe\u2019s time to be a German Christmas\u00a0carol for orphans. Monika Henschel-Schwind outlines to me the story of a\u00a0beautiful German novel by Walter Nordmann that is particularly apposite to\u00a0 this SOS Children charity disc. The heart-warming tale tells of a devastated\u00a0 and lonely father who had lost all his children one by one to illness. The\u00a0 house no longer rings with the sound of children\u2019s laughter. One day an orphan\u00a0child knocked at the door and the lonely father took him in. Later more and more children knocked at his door. Soon the house was again ringing with the\u00a0clamour of children.<\/p>\n

Of the instrumental works in their new\u00a0arrangements for string quartet and basso continuo both the Pachelbel\u00a0Canon<\/i>\u00a0and J.S. Bach\u2019s\u00a0Air<\/i>\u00a0from Suite No. 3 are given outstanding\u00a0performances. The playing has a meditative quality providing a near hypnotic\u00a0 effect and importantly the tempo is never allowed to drag.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 worthy winner of the BBC Music Magazine composing competition was Derek\u00a0 Smith\u2019s\u00a0Carolingua<\/i>\u00a0for boy soprano voices and string quartet. Extended\u00a0at over twelve minutes the infectious appeal of\u00a0Carolingua<\/i>\u00a0is its fresh\u00a0and accessible contemporary feel. For the text the composer has selected four\u00a0carols in different languages. Earl J. Reisdorff\u2019s enchanting setting of G. K. Chesterton\u2019s verse\u00a0The Christ-child Carol<\/i>\u00a0for boy soprano voices and\u00a0 string quartet is highly appealing in the manner of a John Rutter score.<\/p>\n

Recorded in Munich the sound quality is of a high standard if\u00a0the choir is a touch close at times. Full texts are included but not English\u00a0translations of the German carols. This excellent disc on NEOS is a Christmas\u00a0winner and a refreshing change from the usual cloying festive releases.<\/p>\n

O du fr\u00f6hliche –<\/b>\u00a0Das Henschel-Quartett mit den T\u00f6lzer S\u00e4ngerknaben<\/b><\/p>\n

Schade, dass das Prinzregententheater nur m\u00e4\u00dfig besetzt ist. Denn die Weihnachtsgala zugunsten des Vereins SOS-Kinderdorf mit dem Henschel-Quartett, der Cembalistin Marga Scheurich-Henschel, dem Kontrabassisten Frank Reinecke und dem T\u00f6lzer Knabenchor ist ein tolles Weihnachtskonzert. Festlich, aber nie kitschig. Dazu, \u00dcberzuckerung zu vermeiden, tragen erst einmal die Instrumentalisten bei. Sie bringen bei Bachs Air aus der Ouvert\u00fcre in D-Dur, BWV 1068, eine schlicht gefasste Innigkeit zum Ausdruck und interpretieren den ber\u00fchmten Pachelbel-Kanon, das Allegro con spirito aus Haydns G-Dur-Quartett op. 76 Nr. 1 oder das Allegro aus Mozarts A-Dur-Quartett KV 464 pr\u00e4gnant. So werden die musikalischen Gesten deutlich erkennbar, darf bei Corellis „Weihnachtskonzert“, dem Concerto Grosso in g-Moll, op. 6 Nr. 8, durchaus auch eine gewisse klangliche Herbheit entstehen. Das ist sch\u00f6n und \u00fcberzeugend.<\/p>\n

Auch die Texte, die die Schauspielerin Carolin Fink mit Nachdruck rezitiert, wirken keineswegs versonnen. Theodor Storms „Knecht Ruprecht“ taugt in Finks Vortrag glatt zum Thriller, und Marie Luise Kaschnitz“ „Was war das f\u00fcr ein Fest“ zeichnet ein sehr starkes Bild von der Gefahr, in der modernen Zeit den Wert eines Familienfests zu vergessen. Fast tr\u00f6stlich wirkt dagegen die unbeschwerte Frische, mit der der T\u00f6lzer Knabenchor seine Weihnachtslieder und Chor\u00e4le singt. Chorleiter Ralf Ludewig gibt dabei ungemein starke dynamische Kontraste vor, Begleiter Clemens Haudum erg\u00e4nzt die Chors\u00e4tze mit dem Akkordeon um h\u00fcbsche, pastellige Farben. Und dennoch erz\u00e4hlt der Chor mit Esprit dankenswerterweise weit mehr von kindlich-st\u00fcrmischer Vorfreude denn von ruhiger Besinnlichkeit. „Jauchze laut, Jerusalem!“, hei\u00dft es in H\u00e4ndels „Tochter Zion“. Selten wird dieser Text gesanglich so w\u00f6rtlich umgesetzt. Gro\u00dfartig.<\/p>\n
