Born in St Petersburg where he studied with the legendary Ilya Musin, Semyon Bychkov’s name shot to international attention in the mid 80’s when, following concerts with the New York and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras, he was signed to an exclusive recording contract. Semyon Bychkov has since held the positions of Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris (1989–98), Principal Guest Conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic (1990–94), and of Maggio Musicale (1992–98); Chief Conductor of the Dresden Semperoper (1998–2003), and Chief Conductor of WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne (1997–2010). As well as concerts and broadcasts in Cologne, he has undertaken annual tours with WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, regularly visiting the United States, Europe and the Far East. As a guest conductor, he is frequently invited to conduct the world’s most renowned orchestras. Semyon Bychkov is an admired and prolific recording artist, and his discography features over 30 CDs and DVDs.
