Israeli-German composer Eres Holz was born in 1977 in Rehovot, near Tel Aviv. From 1998 to 2002 he completed a bachelor’s degree in composition with Ruben Seroussi at Tel Aviv University, in which he was funded by a talent scholarship. From 2004 to 2012 he pursued a diploma and master’s degree in composition with Hanspeter Kyburz as well as in computer music with Wolfgang Heiniger at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, where he has held a post as lecturer in algorithmic composition since 2008 and has served as an artistic project manager since 2019. From 2011 to 2012 he was artistic director of the music education project “Querklang”, a cooperation between the Berlin University of the Arts and MaerzMusik, the festival for contemporary music. In 2008 he assisted at the IRCAM-coordinated “European Course for Musical Composition and Technologies” at the Technical University of Berlin.
Eres Holz regularly receives scholarships, commissions and awards. In 2020 and 2021 his MACH compositions were supported by Musikfonds e.V. and GEMA. In 2017 he was composer in residence of Deutschlandfunk and the Kunst-Station Sankt Peter Köln. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 he received scholarships from the Berlin Senate. In 2014 his composition Vier Schatten received the Carl von Ossietzky Composition Award. In 2012 he won a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and was nominated for the German Music Authors’ Prize in the promotion of young talent category. In 2005, 2008 and 2010 he was awarded the Hanns Eisler Prize. His works are regularly performed by renowned artists at festivals such as Ultraschall Berlin, Impuls (Graz), Forum neuer Musik (Cologne) and the SWR JetztMusik concerts series and have been recorded by Deutschlandfunk, RBB and other radio broadcasters. In-depth portraits dedicated to him have been broadcast on numerous television and radio stations. Since 2014 Holz has been a member of the Academy of German Music Authors, from 2015 to 2018 he was a jury member of the “initiative neue musik berlin e.V.”; in 2020 he was appointed to the jury of the Berlin Senate in the area of artistic sponsorship.
