OPENING PERFORMANCE ORCHESTRA is a seven-member ensemble encompassing a wide genre span—from the 20th-century electronic thrusts of the musical avant-garde to contemporary Japanese noise music. Their creations are based on fraction music, with the initial sound being digitally destroyed, fractured and uncompromisingly rid of all its original attributes within the spirit of the credo “no melodies—no rhythms—no harmonies.” The main musical instruments are computers, yet on special occasions the orchestra also apply classical and modern instruments, including the theremin, moog and intonarumori. Opening Performance Orchestra have given almost a hundred concerts (at the Ostrava Days, Maerz-Musik, Wroclaw Industrial Festival, Prague Industrial Festival, ZKM Karlsruhe, and elsewhere) and released approximately 20 recordings, initially at their own expense and later with established labels (Sub Rosa, Drone Records, menstrualrecordings, Psych.KG). They have worked with a number of academic and non-academic musical figures, including Milan Knížák, Hiroshi Hasegawa, Phill Niblock, Blixa Bargeld, Luciano Chessa, Masami Akita aka Merzbow, Reinhold Friedl, Maurizio Bianchi, Bill Laswell and Iggy Pop.
