YANG Jing

The composer YANG Jing was born in December 1963 on the south bank of the Yellow River. Rooted in the millennia-old tradition of Chinese music, she builds on a vast amalgam of Asian and Western musical history with an innovative spirit of discovery to create her own musical voice. Their compositions draw on the long tradition of pipa music, but also give an idea of ​​the future development of the instrument. She is a renowned pipa virtuoso who has performed for decades on stages in Asia, Europe, the USA and the Middle East, from the Barbican Center in London to the Golden Hall in Vienna, from Carnegie Hall in New York to Suntory Hall in Tokyo, from a town hall named after her in England to the opera house in St. Louis on the Mississippi, from the concert halls in Beijing to the stages of her adopted home in Switzerland. Their virtuoso performances thrilled the audience with the never-before-heard sounds of the pipa.

Her musical training began at the age of six. From the age of 12, she attended various music schools, including the Henan Opera Music School and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She studied composition with Minoru Miki in Tokyo and earned her master's degree in contemporary music and theory, as well as jazz and jazz arrangements at the university of the Arts Bern in Switzerland. Since the age of 13, she has worked in the Henan Opera Ensemble, the China National Traditional Orchestra, the Asia Ensemble, the Jazz Ensemble, as a soloist, lecturer and musical director. She writes music for various ensembles, for symphony orchestra, choir, ensemble, multimedia and film. Her works have been performed in the United States, Europe, China and Japan.
