George Aperghis

Composer

Biography:

Georges Aperghis, born in Athens in 1945 as the son of a sculptor and a painter, is largely self-taught: he was interested in both painting (he exhibited his pictures at the age of twelve) and music, which he discovered through the radio and private piano lessons. In 1963, he moved to Paris, where he gave up painting in favour of music and began his studies in composition.

His early works were influenced by serial techniques and the innovations of Iannis Xenakis. He also took a particular interest in the works of John Cage and Mauricio Kagel before turning his attention to music theatre. In 1971, he composed his first musical theatre piece, La tragique histoire du nécromancien Hieronimo et de son miroir, for two female voices, lute and violoncello. In 1976, he founded the multimedia theatre group Atelier Théâtre in Bagnolet, a suburb of Paris.

Et Musique (ATEM). The performances are inspired by everyday life, social events are transported into a poetic, often absurd and satirical world, and the plot only takes its final shape during rehearsals with the collaboration of musicians and actors. Aperghis has written numerous other music theatre pieces, compositions for solo instruments and voices, as well as chamber music and orchestral works.
