Biography:

Julia Rebekka Adler Julia Rebekka Adler (née Mai), the highest-ranked German participant in the 2004 ARD Competition in the viola category, received her first viola lessons at the age of six and won several first prizes at the national level in the Jugend musiziert competition early in her career (twice in viola and once in string quartet). In 1994, at the age of sixteen, she recorded her first CD as a soloist (Darius Milhaud's Viola Concerto No. 1, with conductor Nicolás Pasquet).

Despite her successes, she did not choose an early solo career; she completed her school education and then studied viola with Kim Kashkashian, Johannes Lüthy and Wolfram Christ in Freiburg, Hartmut Rohde in Berlin and Yuri Bashmet in Siena. In January 2007, she completed her concert exam at the Berlin University of the Arts and received the highest distinction in the viola department that has ever been awarded at this university.

Julia Rebekka Adler has been a member of numerous renowned ensembles, including the Kuss Quartet and the Pellegrini Quartet. She has performed chamber music with Tim Vogler, David Geringas, Antje Weithaas, Wen-Sin-Yang, Karl Leister and Hans-Jörg Schellenberger, among others. She currently plays in the Berlin Soloists Octet (with Mirijam Contzen and Jens Peter Maintz) and in the Viardot Piano Quartet. Since 2004, she has been deputy principal violist with the Munich Philharmonic.

Her openness to new music led to a performance under the baton of Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Donaueschingen Music Festival in 1998, as well as numerous premieres of contemporary compositions for viola. In 2004, she recorded the compulsory piece for the ARD Competition (Parthenope for solo viola by David Sawer) for Bavarian Radio. She has inspired many contemporary composers to write works for viola or viola d'amore, including Wilfried Hiller and Gerardo Gandini.
