Biography:
Moritz Eggert was born in Heidelberg in 1965 and now lives in Munich. As a composer, he likes to sit on the fence, sometimes provocative and challenging, sometimes exhilarating and inspiring. He is just as interested in melody and emotionality as he is in experimental or performative soundscapes – for him, one is not a contradiction of the other. Through projects that have been widely discussed in the media, such as Die Tiefe des Raumes (The Depth of Space) and the opera Freax (together with Christoph Schlingensief), he constantly attempts to undermine the common perception of new music as something only for an expert audience. In addition to his focus on music theatre, for which Eggert has written 19 operas to date, he enjoys cultivating more chamber music-like or experimental nuances, for example in his song cycle Neue Dichter Lieben (New Poets Love) or his piano cycle Hämmerklavier (Hammer Piano). His current projects include new operas for Bonn and Vienna, several instrumental concertos and the musical theatre opening of the Beethovenfest Bonn 2022 together with Axel Brüggemann.
As a pianist, singer, conductor and performer, Eggert is committed to both contemporary and classical repertoire. While still a student, he founded the aDevantgarde Festival together with Sandeep Bhagwati, which continues to take place regularly. For the neue musikzeitung, he runs the Bad Blog of Musick, the most widely read blog on contemporary music in Germany. Eggert is also present in the media, for example as a fast-talking opera guide in Oper für Ungeduldige (Opera for the Impatient, ZDF) or in film documentaries such as Epochen der Musikgeschichte (Epochs of Music History, BBC/ARTE). He teaches composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich and has been president of the German Composers' Association since 2020.
