Carmina Quartet

String Quartet

Biography:

Matthew Enderle, violin
Susanne Frank, violin
Wendy Champney, viola
Stephan Goerner, cello

The Carmina Quartet, founded in Switzerland in 1984, is characterized by great musical intensity, self-evident perfection and a keen interest in stylistic faithfulness to the original. Spectacular competition successes made headlines in the international press early on and paved the way to the great concert stages of the world. The Financial Times ranked the Carmina Quartet among the leading string quartets of the time.

The quartet's mentors include the Amadeus Quartet and the La Salle Quartet, Sandor Végh and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In particular, the collaboration with this great personality promoted an understanding of the historical style of playing, which since then has shaped the interpretations of the Carmina Quartet in an undogmatic and lively way. In addition to a large quartet repertoire that includes rarities from all eras, the quartet also cultivates the interaction with musicians such as Mitsuko Uchida, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Emmanuel Pahud, Truls Mork, Wolfgang Meyer, Sabine Meyer, Antonio Menesses, Veronika Hagen, Olaf Baer and Wolfgang Holzmair.

All CD recordings released by Denon so far have been unanimously admired by critics and audiences alike and have been honored with renowned awards: Gramophone Award, Diapason d'Or, Choc, German Record Critics' Prize, Grammy Award nomination.

As a quartet in residence at the Musikhochschule Zürich/Winterthur, the Carmina Quartet passes on its extensive experience and unmistakable, independent musicality to the next generation.
