Luke Juhart

Biography:

Luke Juhart is a musician, accordionist and teacher. There's a tenacity, a stubborn conviction in what he does. For several years he has been tirelessly collaborating with contemporary composers, commissions new works from them, enters into creative dialogues with them and has performed at least 40 premieres of new works in this way, alone or in various ensembles. He regularly works with Uroš Rojko, with whom he also plays in the Trio Quo Vadis, and is in constant creative contact with Vinko Globokar. Among other things, he appeared as a soloist in two of his monumental works, in Radiography d'un roman (SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg, Donaueschingen), previously in the factory The Angel of History (Slovene Philharmonic under Diego Masson). In addition, Globokar's is a demanding work that, until recently, was seldom performed dialogue about air the most common composition in Juhart's programs in recent years; the interpreter breathed new life into the work. Luka Juhart also often works with Thomas Larcher, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf, Eduard Demetz, Klaus Huber, Bojana Šaljič Podešva, Vito Žuraj, Matej Bonin, Volker Heyn, Arturo Fuentes and numerous other composers together. These sonic meetings are documented on sound carriers. In 2010 the CD was released by the Zavod Sploh Institute and the l'innomable label Dialogue with works by five contemporary authors. In addition, recordings of his performances appeared in the documentary series of the Donaueschinger Musiktage on the NEOS label, on Eduard Demetz' author's CD and among the selected performances from the Belgian Festival Transit. With Juhart, immersing himself in contemporary sonority is more than just searching for and filling a repertoire niche. He still plays Baroque music regularly, for example, although he says he is also motivated by concern for the culture of the game, and that his sense of detailed articulation and phrasing might somehow elude him in the long run if he only played contemporary music. During his studies he took part in lessons and master classes with specialists in early music, harpsichordists, organists, viol players and conductors. He also plays this music regularly with the Camerata Zürich, with Thomas and Patrick Demenga, Christoph Bossert and Volker Jacobsen, among others. His attitude to contemporary music goes far beyond conventional views, because the accordionist does not move in his work solely in this Musicians from the area assigned to the institution of Central European musical tradition. Thus Luka Juhart already entered the field of free improvisation, the musical activity that puts the musician, trained for the perfect performance of written music, in completely unforeseeable situations and before previously unknown risks. Leaving musical specialization is also his interest in composing, from which the work emerged in 2013 hrUP developed for accordion - so far Juhart's only digression into composing. The institutions and halls in which Luka Juhart performs are also interestingly diverse and dissimilar. He played in renowned concert halls such as the Royal Albert Hall, the Wiener Musikverein and the Zurich Tonhalle. He is one of those ever-growing numbers of instrumentalists who don't see the aesthetics of music as tied solely to traditional places and spaces of musical art. That's how his first CD was released Dialogue not with a classical music label, but with the Zavod Sploh Institute, which focuses primarily on improvisation and underground music. He was also heard in a series of improvised concerts “Confine aperto” and at the sound arts festival “EarZoom”. He has performed at prestigious European festivals including the BBC Proms in London, Klangpfad Schwaz, Warsaw Autumn, Transit in Leuven, Belgium, and November Music in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. He has played with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, ORF Radio- Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, Ensemble Windkraft and Ensemble Aventure. Luka Juhart also gives lectures for composers and accordion students. He led workshops at conservatories and academies, mostly in Central and Northern Europe. He has been working at the Music Academy in Ljubljana since 2012 and has been a lecturer since 2014. After graduating from high school with Andrej Lorber at the Music High School in Maribor, Juhart studied at the Trossingen State University of Music in the class of Professor Hugo Noth. His master class studies with Professor Stefan Hussong He graduated from the Würzburg University of Music in 2008. Since then he has been commuting between numerous European cities and Slovenske Konjice, where he lives with his wife and two children.
