Biography:

The violinist and violist MaryOliver, born in La Jolla (California), received her PhD from the University of California, San Diego for her research on the theory and practice of improvised music. Her work as a soloist and ensemble member includes both composed and improvised contemporary music.

She premiered works by John Cage, Chaya Czernowin, Brian Ferneyhough, George E. Lewis and Iannis Xenakis, among others, and worked with improvising musicians and dancers such as Han Bennink, Mark Dresser, Katie Duck, Cor Fuhler, Rozemarie Heggen, Joëlle Léandre, Thomas Lehn, George E. Lewis, Phil Minton, Alexander von Schlippenbach, and Michael Schumacher.

Mary Oliver has appeared as a soloist at many music festivals, including the Brisbane Biennale, Donaueschinger Musiktage, MaerzMusik, Salzburg Festival, Berlin Festival, Berlin Jazz Festival, Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto Jazz Festivals.

She currently lives as a freelance artist in Amsterdam and teaches at the Hogeschol voor Kunsten Utrecht. She is a member of the Instant Composer's Pool Orchestra, the Magpie Music Dance Company and the duo Oliver & Heggen.
