Thomas Hummel

Composer

Biography:

Thomas Hummel, born in 1962, grew up in a family in the Rhineland that was committed to the natural sciences and classical music. He played the cello and began composing at an early age. First, however, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and studied chemistry. Alongside his studies, he created new compositions for which he received prizes. After graduating in 1986, on the advice of a friend, he began studying composition in Cologne. A short time later he continued his studies in Freiburg with Mathias Spahlinger.

The amalgamation of scientific and musical training soon brought him to his second profession, music informatics. After a two-year stay at IRCAM in Paris, where he attended computer music courses and performed several compositions, he moved to SWR's EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO in 1994. As an employee there, he realized live electronic works with countless composers and performed them.

In addition, he initially developed new live electronic concepts and software for spatial sound control. Later he worked increasingly on orchestration information systems. ›The Virtual Orchestra‹ was released in 2002 and is in service internationally. The successor system ›conTimbre‹ has been developed since 2006 in cooperation with many interpreters of contemporary music.

Thomas Hummel repeatedly taught computer music and electronic music at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design and at the Musicology Institute of the University of Freiburg. His works have been performed by the RSO Stuttgart, the Kairos Quartet, the Holst-Sinfonietta and the Ensemble SurPlus, among others.
