Biography:

Tomas Nunez received cello lessons at the age of six at the Åland Institute of Music. He continued his education at the Turku Conservatory and later at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Timo Hanhinen, Hannu Kiiski and Marko Ylönen. Tomas performs regularly as a soloist and as a chamber musician and has played in orchestras such as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera, the Sinfonia Lahti and the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra. In 2010 he won the XI. Cello competition in Turku 1st prize. He also received the award for Best Performance of the Competition Commission and the Audience Award. In the same year he was appointed principal cellist of the Finnish National Opera Orchestra. In 2015 he took up the same position with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and since 2017 he has been principal cellist with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He plays a 1779 Lorenzo & Tomaso Carcassi cello owned by Finnish Broadcasting Corporation Yle.
