Biography:

Arturo Tamayo, born in Madrid, studied at the law faculty of his native city and at the same time completed a music degree at the Real Conservatorio de Música, graduating with an honorary award for composition. He attended a conducting course with Pierre Boulez in Basel and then studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg (composition with Wolfgang Fortner and Klaus Huber, conducting with Francis Travis). After completing his conducting studies, he attended a conducting course with Witold Rowicki in Vienna.

Arturo Tamayo has a busy concert schedule and makes numerous radio productions, especially in the field of new music. He works with major European orchestras, appears at the most important international music festivals and is a sought-after conductor of world premieres (including works by Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, Sylvano Bussotti, Klaus HuberWolfgang Rihm, Jose Luis de Delas, Giacinto Scelsi and Brian Ferneyhough).

He has made guest appearances at numerous opera houses, including: Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opéra National de Paris, Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro La Fenice (Venice), Opera di Roma, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan (Ueno), Teatro Real in Madrid. His discography is extensive and varied; he has received numerous international awards for his recordings. Arturo Tamayo is a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes of Granada; In 2002 he received the Spanish music prize ›Premio Nacional de Música‹.
