Athena Quartet

Biography:

With its naming, the Athena Quartet Berlin spans an arc to Athena, the ancient goddess of the arts and sciences. The quartet was founded in Berlin in 1999. The artists studied with the Alban Berg Quartet and attended master classes e.g. at Ferenc Rádos, Gabor Takácz and the Arditti Quartet.

Through intensive collaboration with composers such as Gyorgy Kurtag, Henri Dutilleux, Pascal Dusapin, Konstantia Gourzi and Hans Zender developed a great interest in contemporary music. Another focus in the quartet's broad repertoire is the study of works from the Viennese classics under aspects of historical performance practice.

The Athena Quartet was a prizewinner at the Concours de Genéve/International Music Competition and won the International Chamber Music Competition »Joseph Joachim« in Weimar. In addition to regular radio recordings on SWR, BR, WDR, RBB and NDR, the quartet has released two CD recordings, e.g. with works by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Sergej Prokofiev and György Kurtág.

The ensemble gives numerous concerts in Europe and appears at international festivals.
