Collegium Novum Zurich

Biography:

The  Collegium Novum Zurich (CNZ), founded in 1993, has become an integral part of the Swiss cultural scene. Driven by curiosity about contemporary music, the orchestra has never lost its importance over the decades and conveys contemporary music to a broad audience. The main focus of the 25-strong ensemble has always been creation, musical exchange and collaboration with composers. This results in both large-scale ensemble works, which u. a. be performed in the Tonhalle Zurich, as well as interdisciplinary works that are tailored to diverse, even unfamiliar venues. Productions range from the classic concert experience to musical theater to improvisation and performance.

The ensemble, which is made up of leading musicians from the Swiss music scene, programs the latest music alongside classics and masterpieces from the 20th and 21st centuries, putting them in a meaningful context. The high level of the soloist ensemble allows varied concert planning in flexible line-ups, which, in addition to conducted concerts, also includes chamber music concerts in different line-ups and the solo performance of the musicians.

The CNZ premiered numerous works, including compositions by William Blank, Xavier Dayer, Beat Furrer, Georg Friedrich Haas, Hans Werner Henze, Klaus Huber, Michael Jarrell, Jorge López, Cécile Marti, Isabel Mundry, Emmanuel Nunes, Helmut Oehring and Enno Poppe. Conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Tito Ceccherini, Sylvain Cambreling, Pablo Heras-Casado, Heinz Holliger, Mauricio Kagel, Lin Liao, Johanna Malangré, Susanna Mälkki, Emilio Pomàrico, Peter Rundel, Elena Schwarz and Yalda Zamani have conducted the ensemble so far .

The CNZ performs regularly at home and abroad and is a guest at most of the renowned festivals and organisers. It makes recordings on various CD labels and has gained an excellent reputation on the international market.
