Biography:

Cristóbal Halffter is one of Spain's best-known contemporary composers. Born in Madrid in 1930, he spent part of his youth in Germany. After working as a teacher and director at the Real Conservatorio de Música in Madrid, he began his international career as a conductor and composer in the XNUMXs.

Numerous prizes and honorary titles testify to the enormous importance and influence that Halffter's music exerts. Cristóbal Halffter is a recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit and the Goethe Medal. In 1981 King Juan Carlos of Spain awarded him the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts.

He is a member of the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, PhD from the Universidad de León and PhD from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. In 1994 he received the Montaigne Prize from the Hamburg Foundation FVS in recognition of the humanistic content of his music, its importance for Spanish musical life and his contribution to European culture.

In 1995 he was awarded the European Prize for Composition.
