Biography:

Galina Ustvolskaya, born in 1919 in Petrograd (St. Petersburg), studied from 1937 to 1939 at the music school there and until 1947 at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. Here she received an aspirant and then headed a composition class at the music school.

Her composition teacher, Dmitri Shostakovich, was enthusiastic about her. Against the resistance of his colleagues in the Composers' Union, he repeatedly campaigned for her. Alongside Sofia Gubaidulina, Galina Ustvolskaya is considered to be the most important female composer in Russia. Her catalog of works is extremely concentrated, her musical message is succinct and uncompromising. Galina Ustvolskaya died on December 22, 2006 in St. Petersburg.
