DAVID TUDOR, born in Philadelphia (Pennsilvania) in 1926, studied with H. William Hawke (organ and theory), Irma Wolpe Rademacher (piano) and Stefan Wolpe (composition and analysis). He initially worked as an organist and later became known as one of the leading pianists of the avant-garde. He premiered numerous works by contemporary composers (e.g. Earle Brown, Sylvano Bussotti, Morton Feldman, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Christian Wolff, Stefan Wolpe) with great success.

Cage began working with John Cage in the early 1950s as a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Tudor gradually ended his active pianist career to devote himself exclusively to the composition of live electronic music.

He was one of the four artists who collaborated on the design of the Pepsi Pavilion at Expo 70 in Osaka. Many of Tudor's compositions involve multimedia aspects: lighting effects, laser projections, dance, theatre, film and television. He has collaborated with artists such as Jacqueline Monnier, Lowell Cross, Molly Davies, Viola Farber, Anthony Martin, Robert Rauschenberg and Sophia Ogielska. In 1992, after Cage's death, he took over as musical director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

David Tudor died on August 13, 1996 at his home in Tomkins Cove (NY).
