Biography:

HERMANN KELLER, born in 1945 in Zeitz (Saxony-Anhalt), received his first piano lessons at the age of 6 and began to compose at the age of 14. From 1963 to 1968 he studied composition with Johann Cilenšek and piano with Ingeborg Herkomer at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Weimar. This was followed by an aspirant and teaching position at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin.

Since 1971 he has worked regularly with jazz musicians. His Berlin improvisational quartet and trio achieved international fame. Numerous improvisation models and compositions with improvisation parts were created. Hermann Keller has been a freelance composer, pianist and improvisation musician since 1981. He teaches music theory and improvisation at the Freie Musikschule Musikhaus eV, which he co-founded in 1990.

His compositions were u. a. performed in the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, in the Künstlerhaus Boswil, at the Musikbiennale Berlin, the Berliner Festwochen, the Klangwerkstatt Mannheim, the MDR Musiksommer, the UltraSchall Festival Berlin and the Rheinsberger Musiktage. The interpreters of his works include the Jena Symphony Orchestra, the Hallische Philharmonie, the Ensemble Modern, the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, the Ensemble Mosaik, the Modern Art Sextet and the ensemble chronophonie as well as Heinz Holliger, Steffen Schleiermacher, Ingo Metzmacher, Tomas Bächli and Vinko globokar.
