Biography:

The Russian-Jewish pianist Yasha Nemtsov was born in Magadan in 1963. He graduated from the special music school of the Leningrad Conservatory (with a gold medal) and then continued his musical education at the Leningrad Conservatory (concert diploma with distinction). He has lived in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1992. "Jascha Nemtsov is a pianist worthy of Liszt's lineage," was the verdict of Fono Forum magazine on the occasion of his recording of Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies.

In addition to the classical-romantic piano repertoire, Nemtsov dedicated several concert programs to works by Jewish composers who were persecuted and murdered by the National Socialists. Other areas of specialization are Jewish art music and Russian music of the 20th century, especially works by Dmitri Shostakovich. So far, Jascha Nemtsov has recorded a total of 25 CDs with numerous world premiere recordings. These include works for solo piano and chamber music with partners Tabea Zimmermann (viola), David Geringas (violoncello), Ingolf Turban, Kolja Blacher and Dmitri Sitkovetsky (violin), Chen Halevi (clarinet) or the Vogler Quartet.

Several CDs have received international awards, including: Audiophile Reference - The Best of 2001, Classic Today Recommendation, CHOC - Le Monde de la Musique, Recording of the Month (MusicWeb), Disc of the Month April 2006 (BBC Music Magazine). The CD with sonatas for violin and piano by Shostakovich and Vineyard (with violinist Kolja Blacher) received the German Record Critics' Prize in 2007. dr Jascha Nemtsov is also active in musicology. Since 2002 he has been a member of the Institute for Jewish Studies at the University of Potsdam. In 2004 he received his doctorate on ›The New Jewish School in Music‹ and his habilitation in 2007.
