Martin Smolka

Composer

Biography:

The Czech composer works with intervals, which he overhears from “natural” sounds – boat sirens and railway whistles, for example, or ethnological music.

Born in Prague in 1959, studied Martin Smolka at the music academy. However, he received decisive impulses in his private lessons with Marek Kopelent. His works, in which Smolka uses various forms of microtonality, are now performed at all contemporary music festivals.

From 1983 to 1998 Smolka was the artistic director and pianist of the Prague ensemble AGON, a group specializing in the performance of unconventional contemporary music. In addition, he is also active in the experimental theater scene, teaching and researching the theoretical reflection of the Czech avant-garde current.
