Biography:
The Munich Chamber Orchestra (MKO) is known worldwide for its exciting and varied programmes, which contrast works from earlier centuries with music of the present in an associative and exciting way. The core of the ensemble, founded in 1950, is made up of 28 permanent string players from 14 different countries. The MKO flexibly expands its line-up in cooperation with a core of first-class musical guests from top European orchestras and thus also sets interpretational standards in major works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert or Mendelssohn.
The MKO's tireless commitment to contemporary music is evident in the numerous works it has premiered over the past few decades. Composers such as Iannis Xenakis, Wolfgang Rihm, Tan Dun, Chaya Czernowin, Georg Friedrich Haas, Pascal Dusapin, Salvatore Sciarrino and Jörg Widmann have written for the MKO. In recent years, commissions for compositions have been received, e.g. awarded to Beat Furrer, Younghi Pagh-Paan, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Thomas Larcher, Milica Djordjević, Clara Iannotta, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, Mark Andre, Stefano Gervasoni, Márton Illés, Miroslav Srnka, Lisa Streich, Johannes Maria Staud and Tigran Mansurian .
