Pierre Laurent Aimard

Piano

Biography:

The composer György Ligeti described Pierre-Laurent Aimard as the leading interpreter of contemporary music - because technical perfection and poetic sensitivity are paired in his playing.

According to his own statement, the pianist from Lyon was "magnetically attracted" to new music from his earliest youth. Studies with Yvonne Loriod, the wife of the composer Olivier Messiaen, were formative. She introduced the XNUMX-year-old to her husband, who became Aimard's "musical father".

In 1973 the artist won the Olivier Messiaen competition and launched an unprecedented international career. Three years later, Pierre Boulez brought him into the Ensemble Intercontemporain as a solo pianist. Aimard works with almost all the great composers of our time. But he is also a sought-after interpreter of the "traditional" repertoire.
