Biography:

THOMAS GROSSENBACHER was born in Zurich. He is principal cellist in the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra and lecturer at the Zurich University of Music and Performing Arts. After his first cello lessons with Tatjana Valleise and Mischa Frey, he completed his teaching diploma with Claude Starck at the Zurich Conservatory. At the Musikhochschule Lübeck, in the class of David Geringas, he completed his studies with the concert exam, with the distinction »With distinction«. He also received important artistic impulses from Menahem Pressler, Robert Mann, György Ligeti and Alfred Schnittke. Thomas Grossenbacher gives concerts in Europe, the USA and Japan.

He is a member of the »Trio Caleidoscopio« with Keiko Tamura and Primoz Novsak. He has repeatedly taken part in various festivals such as in Ernen, Davos, Aspen (Colorado), Ittingen and Gstaad. He has performed successfully as a soloist with conductors such as David Zinman, Armin Jordan, Paavo Berglund and as a chamber music partner with Leon Fleisher, Hélène Grimaud, Joshua Bell, Kyoko Takezawa, dem Carmina Quartet and the American String Quartet. The 2003 CD recording of Richard Strauss' Don Quixote (Arte Nova) with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, conducted by David Zinman, received great international acclaim and was voted the best recording available by BBC Music Magazine.
