Biography:

Gerard grisey, born in Belfort (France) in 1946, studied at the music academy in Trossingen from 1963–65 and then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris. 1968-72 he was a student of Olivier Messiaen and also received composition lessons at the École Normale de Musique with Henri Dutilleux. He took part in the summer courses of the Accademia Chigiana in Siena and attended courses with Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti and Iannis Xenakis at the International Summer Courses in Darmstadt. 1972-74 he was a fellow at the Villa Medici in Rome and founded the group L'Itinéraire together with Tristan Murail, Roger Tessier and Michael Levinas. 1974-75 he attended courses on acoustics with Émile Leipp at the Université Paris VI. From 1982 to 86 he taught composition and music theory at the University of California, Berkeley, and from 1986 he was professor of instrumentation and composition at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. Gerard Grisey died in Paris in 1998.
