Bernd Alois Zimmerman

Composer

Biography:

With his opera "The Soldiers" and the "Requiem for a Young Poet" in the 1960s, Bernd Alois Zimmermann advanced to become one of the leading composers of the post-war generation.

His oeuvre, which includes stage works, a symphony, ballet music and solo concerts, is characterized by a very unique style that combines serial techniques and the ideas of the Darmstadt avant-garde with jazz influences and quotations from historical composers.

Born near Cologne in 1918, Zimmermann studied school music, musicology and composition with Heinrich Lemacher and Philipp Jarnach at the Cologne University of Music. He received two scholarships from the Villa Massimo in Rome, received the Great Art Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1960 and was appointed a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts in 1965.

In 1970 the composer took his own life voluntarily.
