Biography:

Udo Zimmermann, born in Dresden in 1943, was a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor from 1954 to 62. From 1962 to 68 he studied composition, conducting and singing at the Dresden University of Music.

This was followed by positions as a dramaturge for contemporary music theater at the Dresden State Opera (1970-84), as a professor for composition at the Dresden University of Music (1978-91) and as artistic director of the workshop for contemporary music theater at the Bonn Opera (1985-90). . In 1986 he founded the Dresden Center for Contemporary Music. From 1990 to 2000 he was director of the Leipzig Opera, from 2001 to 03 general director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and from 2004 to 08 founding director of the European Center for the Arts in Hellerau.

He has been artistic director of the concert series since 1997 musica viva of Bavarian Radio and since 2008 President of the Saxon Academy of Arts.
