Biography:

GARTH KNOX was born in Ireland and raised in Scotland. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Frederick Riddle and soon won several prizes for viola and chamber music. In 1983, at the invitation of Pierre Boulez, he became a member of the Ensemble intercontemporain in Paris. There he got the chance to perform as a soloist (including in concerts conducted by Pierre Boulez) and to play chamber music.

He toured the world with the Ensemble intercontemporain and played at international festivals. In 1990 he became a member of the Arditti Quartet and performed in all the major concert halls of the world. He worked closely with important contemporary composers (including Ligeti, Kurtág, Berio, Xenakis, Lachenmann, Cage, Feldman and Stockhausen) and played numerous world premieres. In 1998, Garth Knox left the quartet to focus on his solo career. He gives concerts all over Europe, the USA and Japan.
