SWR experimental studio

Biography:

The SWR EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO sees itself as an interface between compositional ideas and technical implementation. Every year, several composers and musicians are invited to a working grant, in order to then discuss with the studio staff, i. H. the music IT specialists, sound designers, sound engineers and sound directors to realize their works with the special equipment of the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIOS. Subsequently, the studio is also active in the worldwide performances of these works.

With a presence in the international music business for 40 years now, it has established itself as the leading ensemble for ambitious works with live electronics and regularly gives concerts at almost all major festivals (such as the Berlin Festival, the Vienna Festival, the Salzburg Festival, the Festival d'automne à Paris, the Biennale di Venezia etc.) as well as a number of renowned music theaters and concert halls.

The outstanding productions in the history of the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIOS include works by such important composers as Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Cristóbal Halffter, Vinko Globokar and Luigi Nono, with the latter developing almost all of his late work in close cooperation with the studio and its employees. Nono's »auditory tragedy« Prometheus has been realized more than 1984 times since its premiere in 50 by the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO and can be described as a trend-setting milestone in the music history of the 20th century.

From the younger generation, Mark Andre, Chaya Czernowin, Georg Friedrich Haas, Brice Pauset and José María Sánchez-Verdú in particular have attracted attention as the composers who have produced highly successful future-oriented works in co-production with EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO. Among the performers who have been associated with the studio through many years of collaboration are outstanding musical personalities such as Mauricio Pollini, Claudio Abbado, Gidon Kremer, Carolin and Jörg Widmann, Irvine Arditti and Roberto Fabbriciani.

The EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO has received several international awards for its exemplary work, most recently for the production of works by Luigi Nono with the German Record Critics' Annual Prize.

After Hans Peter Haller and André Richard, Detlef Heusinger has been the artistic director of the EXPERIMENTAL STUDIO since 2006.
